Ayla is the chief of Ioka village and a kind leader. She is very dedicated to her people and willing to sacrifice everything for them. She states a few times that if she is lost in battle, Kino will take her place as chief (I cannot see Kino as chief; he's too childish!). As chief, she must deal with the Laruba tribe and the Reptites. She feels it is her duty to protect all from the Reptites and to help all that have been hurt by the Reptites. Ayla always tells her people to fight the Reptites, and they look at the Larubans as cowards because they hide all the time.
